Psychological disorders can be a scary thing to talk about as not everyone understands what they mean until they have seen the disorder take over someone’s mind, or have experienced it themselves. So, let’s take a look at some of the strangest and rarest psychological disorders that exist in our world.
1. Aboulomania
This psychological disorder prevents those who suffer from it, from making decisions. Tasks as simple as whether or not they want to go to the beach, or whether or not they want a cup of coffee in the morning. This disorder has a very big impact on lives.
2. Kleptomania
Do you ever feel an uncontrollable need to steal things? If that’s the case, you might just be a kleptomaniac. Regardless of how small or big things are, how cheap or expensive they are, kleptomaniacs can’t give up any opportunity that they get to steal things.
3. Pica
We’ve all see those videos of people who have strange addictions, but this takes it to a new level. If you know someone who is addicted to eating household items, such as couch cushions, which offer no benefit to your body, then they are suffering from Pica.
4. Stendhal Syndrome
This syndrome takes “love at first sight” to a whole new level. This puts people who see immense amounts of beauty at the same time into some sort of speechless trance. Whether it be checking out supermodels, or looking at a museum full of masterpieces.
5. Autophagia
Not only does it happen in zombie movies, but wanting to eat human flesh (and more specifically, your own) is a legitimate psychological problem. While it will result in a lot of pain, if it reaches a high level of severity, those suffering from it will not regret doing so and can actually be relieved from the act itself.
6. Genital Retraction Syndrome
This is definitely one of the stranger disorders. Imaging fearing that your genitals are slowly closing in on your body and will shortly be absorbed inside of your body, only to inevitably kill you.
7. Familial Dysautonomia
While it’s definitely a weird disorder, it’s one that a lot of wish we could have. The lack of feeling pain. No more pain from stubbing your toe, no more pain from getting bit by your animals. While it does have its negatives, it’s definitely a very interesting disorder.
8. Stockholm Syndrome
While strange, this is one of the more common disorders from this list and is probably one that you’ve heard of. When suffering from Stockholm syndrome, you will see the person who is holding you captive or causing you pain in a different light, and will sympathise for them rather than despise them.
9. Foreign Accent Syndrome
Everyone loves an unfamiliar accent, but what if you had to put up with having a strange and different accent every day? This syndrome often follows head trauma and isn’t as rare as one may thing.
10. Bigorexia
The chances are that you have heard of the psychological disorder ‘Anorexia’, however the chances are that you haven’t heard of Bigorexia. Bigorexia is somewhat the opposite of anorexia in that you will feel as though you are not muscular at all, although you actually are.
To Conclude…
As you can see, psychological disorders go a lot further than common disorders including depression and anxiety, and go as far as people wanting to eat themselves or even believing that their genitals are trying to kill them.
